Coaching in contrast to consultation

Coaching means a special kind of consultancy. To be able to discuss and judge accordingly, the coach should and often must have a certain background knowledge about the individual fields of activities of his coachee. He is not considered as a substitute of external specialists such as programmers, tax consultants etc., but is in the position to have a good idea about their scope of activities and to put himself in their place. This is the only way how a qualified statement is possible and an acceptance of the coachee against the statements of the coach can be reached.

As a difference to the consultation, one can say about coaching that different psychotherapeutic methods and no instructions are used for coaching. Coaching is a question of the perception of the tasks and not of the analysis of the actual tasks. Here the coach plays the role of the listener and the conversational partner. It is often not a question of the professional point of view, but the coach takes care to put himself in the place of the coachee. Unlike the consultation, coaching does not deal with instructions, but the focus of attention is the reflection of events and persons here. Due to this fact it is obvious that the personal relationship between the coach and the coachee is of special importance. Together with the coachee, the coach develops a change of behavior and the perception. This step often does not take place only in the professional field, but the personality of the coachee is changed and extended as well.

Since a consultation is considerably cheaper than coaching, it takes place for almost all target groups. For reasons of cost, the coaching is usually reserved to managers. Together with the coach they define contents and forms of the coaching. Due to this fact it can be recognized already that the coach and the coachee cooperate on the same eye level. The Coaching serves for the enlargement of the personal competence, i.e. possibilities of the presentation or motivation are worked out which do not have anything to do with the actual professional competence of the coachee. In order to be able to reach these objectives anyway, the voluntariness is an absolute requirement in this matter.
